In a world that often rushes to turn the page, holding space for the full, unfiltered reality of loss is a quiet act of courage. Recently, we invited members of our First Light community to share their personal journeys with us. Today, we are deeply honoured to share Donagh’s story and to honour the memory of their partner, Michael.
Cherishing the Joy: Remembering Michael
When Donagh thinks of Michael, it is his sense of humour that immediately brings a smile. Holding onto those vivid, joyful memories is a vital part of honouring his life and legacy.
When asked what brings the most comfort, Donagh notes that the most practical and meaningful thing friends and family can do is remarkably simple: just listen. Creating a safe, unhurried space to talk about the person they lost makes all the difference.
The Painful Realities of Isolation and Society's Discomfort
Navigating the world without Michael, however, has brought unexpected and exhausting challenges. Donagh is candid about the deep isolation that often accompanies widowhood, shining a light on a painful truth: modern society frequently lacks the capacity to sit with profound grief.
"We are not lepers, and losing our loved one is not contagious," Donagh shares.
Yet, many grieving individuals face an unspoken pressure to return to “normal” as quickly as possible – often so that those around them don’t have to sit with the discomfort of loss. It is a reality that directly confronts the most frustrating myth about loss: the idea that you will eventually just “get over it.” Grief isn’t something to be cured or rushed; it is a continued process of living alongside love and loss.
Discovering a Bold New Identity
Despite the heartbreak and isolation, Donagh has discovered a powerful, bold new strength. When reflecting on the unexpected parts of their identity that have emerged through this journey, Donagh offers a perspective grounded in newfound courage:
"Try everything. Nothing to lose now."
This willingness to step into new experiences even while carrying the weight of loss is a testament to resilience and the complex ways we rebuild our lives.
A Gentle Message for Those in the Early Days
For anyone sitting in the raw, early days of widowhood, Donagh offers a gentle, empowering reminder to take things entirely at your own pace:
"Take all the time you need, and don’t let society dictate how you should grieve."
