Dancing in the Storm: Kylie’s Journey Through Grief and Love

“You lose your person, your go-to, the first person you call with good and bad news… The silence they leave is deafening.”

At First Light, we are continually humbled by the honest, courageous stories our community trusts us with. Today, we are holding space for Kylie as she shares her journey and remembers her beloved partner, Ben.

Remembering Ben

When Kylie thinks of Ben, her mind instantly goes to his face—the most beautiful face, she says, and one that still brings a smile to hers.

Ben was deeply musical, frequently filling their home with the sounds of his guitar, piano, and drums. He wrote beautiful poetry for Kylie, but above all else, his fierce love for Kylie and their children defined who he was.

The Deafening Silence of Young Loss

Losing Ben shattered Kylie’s world. Now, as time moves on, Kylie candidly shares that she is still figuring out who she is without him. The transition from “we” back to “I” remains an ongoing, heavy reality.

She wishes society had a clearer understanding of what it truly means to be widowed young:

"You lose your person, your go-to, the first person you call with good and bad news, and no one fills the space like they did. The silence they leave is deafening and it hurts forever."

Does It Really Get Easier?

This lifelong absence directly challenges one of the most common grief myths Kylie wants to bust—the expectation that time simply makes everything easier.

"It doesn't. There are always reminders of things they are missing, especially with the kids, and it breaks you all over again."

Space, Perspective, and Resilience

While navigating this unimaginable loss, Kylie has uncovered a deep resilience within herself. Outside of pouring her love and energy into raising their children, she has gained a newfound clarity: she no longer has the bandwidth or tolerance for petty drama.

When it comes to receiving support, Kylie notes that one of the most practical and comforting things loved ones did was giving her the space to process everything on her own terms. Sometimes, non-intrusive support and quiet understanding mean the most.

Words for the Early Days

For anyone finding themselves in the agonising, heavy early days of widowhood, Kylie offers this gentle whisper of advice:

"One minute, one hour, one day at a time. Everything can wait."

She leaves our community with a poignant reflection for anyone walking a similar path: “My thoughts are with anyone dancing in this storm.”
